Geraldine on Break – Carol Hallock, artist

Geraldine on Break – Carol Hallock, artist

June 13, 2015 Hope for Habitat: Katrina X

As seen in the movie, “The Best of Me.”

Loose painter and environment artist Carol Hallock often can be spotted kayaking through the bayou, with paint and brushes in hand. She says it is the ultimate plein air experience.

The award-winning artist’s work also has graced the silver screen. A hand embellished giclee of Geraldine on Break was hung above the fireplace in the romance movie, The Best of Me, starring James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan. The movie was filmed in part in Slidell.

The cathartic power of the arts was never more evident to Carol Hallock than it was shortly after Katrina. She recalls showcasing her artwork in an art market just months after the storm, saying it was her most successful showing ever. She was moved by seeing Katrina survivor after survivor purchasing her work, and that of others, from the market.

Carol recounts the story of a woman who purchased her work even though the lady didn’t have her own place to stay. She told Carol that she was purchasing it because she needed the comfort that the painting brought to her.

For Carol, that day provided a profound realization and a poignant moment she will never forget.
